Review of *batteries not included (1987) by Kenneth L — 16 Nov 2008
They simply don't make movies like that anymore. Quintessential 80s fare, this feel-good drama makes a strong case drawing on the tension between ruthless urban development and old-school charm, personified by the terrific Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy.
Absurd premise aside, the film wins with sheer heart and the cast, flying saucers included are adorable and compelling without trying too hard. The result is a poignant tale of lives rebuilt, hope revived, and kindness restored.
