Review of *batteries not included (1987) by Clayton R — 26 Aug 2012
The highly under rated Batteries not included warms the heart and stirs emotion. It is funny, tender and full of passion with rich characters all played well. The 5 main characters all have interesting and complex backgrounds which are revealed perfectly and the viewer becomes emotionally attached to them all.
The film follows these 5 residents of an apartment building due to be demolished by the evil city developers, particular praise goes to Hume Cronyn and especially Jessica Tandy for stand out performances as the failing diner owners struggling financially and with how to deal with Jessica's characters Alzheimer's.
The residents meet small alien machines intent on fixing things in exchange for power and parts. These little ships are perfectly designed and have so many human traits, and the small machines are cuter and provide more "Ahhh"s and giggles than most animated film characters to this day.
Considering this was made in 1987! it still stands tall as an accomplished and brilliant family movie.
