Review of Batman: Year One (2011) by Alex G — 29 Feb 2012
Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's popular superhero story gets a polished and respectful adaptation in this animated feature. The plot surrounds a rookie Batman (Ben McKenzie) struggling to assert his presence in Gotham City's criminal underworld.
The best parts of this movie, however, are definitely with Detective Jim Gordon (Bryan Cranston) and his efforts to keep his nose clean among Gotham's corrupt police force. McKenzie's voice acting is effective at conveying an amateur Batman who is unsure of himself while Cranston repeatedly demonstrates why casting him was a real coup.
Overall, this movie is an engaging and well-executed picture that should delight both newcomers and fans of the source material.
