Review of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) by Julio T — 18 Jul 2017

I don't understand why there is so much hate for this movie. I get some of the writing falls short and that the editing could be better. Personally, I was a little more annoyed at the fact they did not stick to the character of Lex Luthor like the one in SmallVille, Superman Animated Series, or Justice League Animated Series. That Lex Luthor worked great and you could see why he was such a high ranked villain, even if he had no super powers. The one we got from the movie was more like The Joker.

I rather liked the movie when I saw it in the theater. It wasn't a disappointment like Green Lantern, I love that character and it was very sad to see the movie was so terrible. Ben Affleck played a damn good Batman. Wonder Woman was great, by the way, that Wonder Woman movie was epic, better than Spiderman Homecoming, and I like the last Spidey flick. Wonder Woman is the best superhero movie of 2017 so far. Back to this movie, yeah Superman could be better. I loved the iconic portrayal by Christopher Reeves and maybe the world would like to see something that is comparable to that. A bland Superman with no great reason to care much about him is bad. Specially since he is so powerful and godly that we need a good reason to care for him. Lex, I already explained. Michael Rosenbaum or better yet Kevin Spacey would have been a much stronger choice. How about Bryan Cranston? Now that would have been a great choice.

Bottom line the movie is above average, far from perfect and with several holes, but even after watching it a second time on DVD I had to look back and see why people hated it so much. What I will have to say is that if anyone in the industry is reading this: Do not use special effects as a crutch! A good movie still requires good story telling and good development of characters. Even if the character is as well known as Batman or Superman you need good character development and make the audience care. I hope someone up in Hollywood is listening, but then again what do I know about about movie making? I'm just another regular guy with an opinion.
