Review of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) by Stanley C — 16 Mar 2018
The above critical consensus "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice smothers a potentially powerful story -- and some of America's most iconic superheroes -- in a grim whirlwind of effects-driven action.
" - Effects driven action? Were critics expecting practical effects for a man who can fly? Anyway, BvS is a breath of fresh air compared to the slowly stagnating and formulaic superhero movies of late.
Kudos to DC/WB for daring to tell it's stories on its own terms - and it does so successfully without insulting it's audience's intelligence. The funny thing is that if you change the director's name to Nolan, this is the kind of film that critics eat up.
I couldn't watch the recent superhero movies for the 2nd time without dozing off. This (and MOS) actually got better with repeat viewings. It's so nuanced and layered that you actually discover new angles and perspectives each time you watch them.
Not a perfect movie by a long-shot but Snyder has carefully crafted a film that honors and elevates these timeless heroes and characters.
