Review of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) by John S — 02 Jan 2018
Short summary of my thoughts: The opening credit sequence is a rip off from Batman Begins, Wonder Woman's awesome; Ben Affleck isn't the best Batman by far but still not an awful one; Henry Cavill is a fitting Superman; and Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor isn't as bad as I expected (that's not saying much).
The movie primarily serves as the first formal introduction and stage-setter for the Justice League movie, and a more fitting title would be Batman Meets Superman rather than Batman vs. Superman...and that's about it.
I was never really excited about this movie thanks to Zack Snyder's disappointingly mediocre Man of Steel; after that, I didn't expect much. Surprisingly, however, this movie isn't all that bad despite the field day critics are having bashing the hell out of it, and while some of them make decent points, the movie isn't quite as bad as they're making it out to be.
I personally think this movie is better than Man of Steel. Sadly, however, there's more potential in this movie's plot than resorting to a bunch of explosions and fighting a silly, poorly-designed CGI Kryptonian monster (won't fully reveal its identity for the sake of spoilers).
Still, it's not a total waste of time, and I walked out of the theater actually looking forward to future DC movies and excited for the Justice League movie -- something can surely be said for that.
