Review of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) by Sipke D — 29 Sep 2016
This movie had the potential to become the biggest movie of the year and yeahhhh......it didn't work out that well. When I first saw the movie in theatres I didn't know what to think of it: the story was bad and the characters were mostly rushed. However when I now have seen the ultimate cut I can securely say that this one is a lot better than the one we saw in the cinema.
Apart from batman, who clearly stole the show in the theatrical cut, superman also shines the best in this movie. His character has a very clear arc in this movie and he was far more like the Christopher Reeves superman in this movie than in Man of Steel.
The editing in this movie was also a lot smoother than in the theatrical cut, obviously becaus there were 30 minutes cut from the original.
Alfred, Wonder Woman and Perri White were also very good in this movie, even though their parts were minor.
Lois Lane on the other hand was very overused in this movie, her character was crammed into the story at times she definetely had no use of being in that part of the movie. Amy Adams on the other hand did the best she could to make this character as compelling as possible by her good acting.
Most people instantly laugh when you say you liked Jesse Eisenberg's portrayal of Lex Luthor, but I did enjoy him for the most part. I believe that if you take the Lex Luthor title away from him and called him the Riddler instead people would have liked him more. He had a very distinct motivation and he was menacing at times. The creation of doomsday on the other hand was very rushed, it almost felt like they were squeezing two movies in one.
The ending was actually very moving and it did fit the character arc superman created in this movie.
At last I will talk about the fight scenes. It was fun to see the trinity fight doomsday togheter, but the batman combatscene and the actual batman versus superman fightscene were way better shot. The only big problem I have with the batman versus superman fightscene is that they suddenly stop fighting and instantly become friends after superman says the name of the mother of batman. This doesn't fit the narrative of the movie and it makes the batman character look kinda silly and psychotic if you ask me.
All in all, I kinda enjoyed this version of the movie: the characters were mostly good and the action was great.
