Perhaps trying to build a huge cinematic universe with massive implications isn't a good idea after just a couple of films. It takes time to grow and invest in characters and you either need an incredibly long run time, more movies to expand the ideas, or an amazing script that can just blow it out of the water in one hit.

It seems like they went for the former, but it was edited to fit an approved time and lost a bunch of the progress it was going for.
