Review of Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) by Robin L — 16 Sep 2010
BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD is a stunningly helmed, animated, and told Batman story with engaging voice acting and hard-hitting action. The storytelling of RED HOOD is Frank Miller-quality and highly entertaining. The story continually evolves into a upstanding paradox to where evil resides, and where it can come from.
Bruce Greenwood as Batman, Jensen Ackles as the Red Hood, John DiMaggio as the Joker, Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing, and Jason Issacs as Ra's Al Ghul are all outstanding in their respected roles. Ackles in particular owns his role, even more than he does in WB's SUPERNATURAL.
Brandon Vietti, director, uses the hard-hitting action, as intricate and stylized as it is, to service the story and the character examinations. As in PHANTASM, the Red Hood's identity is slowly but gradually revealed. As the reveal doesn't come as much of a shock as it did in the 1993 animated film, it still packs a whallop!
Going in to expect a normal Batman animated film would be the easiest way to enjoy UNDER THE RED HOOD. That way, you'll be amazed at how fluid the narrative and action flows in correspondence to the voice acting. It's a job well done for DC and Warner Bros. Animation!
