Review of Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) by Tom R — 09 Oct 2010
With inventive action scenes, dark storyline, and great writing, Batman: Under the Red Hood is another must-see Dark Knight movie and I love it. The Batman animated movies have been consistently strong along with Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and Batman Beyond: The Return of the Joker.
It's the darkest animated movie so far, being more inspired by Christopher Nolan than Tim Burton or (thank heavens) Joel Schumacher. Usually, I would gripe about how Batman isn't voiced by Kevin Conroy, but his replacement Bruce Greenwood is pretty dang good and the fact that there's a bit more blood and violence in this movie is maybe why they went with different voices than what we're used to.
The story is great because we burrow more into Batman's psyche and the Red Hood is a great villain, almost being Batman's equal. The Joker, Ra's al Ghul, Black Mask, Nightwing, and the Riddler (in a cameo) all play a role and like the other Batman animated movies, the stakes feel so high.
Without spoiling anything, I wish the ending told us a little more about what happened to Red Hood because he feels a bit unresolved. But with the many great action scenes and writing that keeps you intrigued the entire time, you should definitely see Batman: Under the Red Hood.
To date, it might be the best DC comics animated movie yet.
