Review of Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) by Ian B — 20 Nov 2011
One of the best Batman films I've ever seen, live-action or animated. A fantastic, gripping story, plenty of visual flair, great performances, and a surprising amount of violence and dark themes (the opening scene alone is darker than almost anything in the live-action Batman films).
Bruce Greenwood makes a great Batman/Bruce Wayne and I hope they keep him around for future films. John DiMaggio as the Joker, however, kept reminding me of Bender in certain spots. Few and far between, but still slightly distracting. The rest of the cast, including Neil Patrick Harris and Jensen Ackles, really surprised me and turned out a lot better than I was expecting. Definitely some inspired new choices.
It really is the story that makes this one stand out though. It's very cinematic, genuinely interesting and emotional, and hands-down the darkest and most adult of the Batman films. I hope DC keeps this tone with their future films about the Dark Knight. Highly recommended.
