Review of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 (2013) by Jack G — 02 Mar 2013
(2 Stars) This is the most polarizing Batman movie I've ever watched... there were things I loved and things I hated. After the very good The Dark Knight Returns: Part One, I expected Part Two to be an exciting conclusion... maybe even become the best Batman animated film ever. And everything starts great: Bruce Wayne (Peter Weller) VS The Joker (Michael Emerson), a Robin (Ariel Winter) that's pretty cool, and superb animation and action scenes... then Superman showed up...
This movie is grim... somehow grimmer than Watchmen. Batman is supposed to be grim, but Returns is beyond bleak that it seems like there's little entertainment to be had with it. The Joker (Michael Emerson) mercilessly kills left and right. By the end, you'll be depressed. I absolutely abhor what they did to Superman... not only does he have little to do with Batman's story, he's also Ronald Reagan's pawn (real subtle, by the way)? This is the kind of political babble that belongs in Watchmen. I hate when real-life politics mix with superheroes; I want to ESCAPE reality and ENJOY superheroes. While I can see a lot of people digging The Dark Knight Returns: Part Two, I can't lie to you and say I like it.
