Review of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 (2012) by Brad D — 21 Apr 2013
I didn't think it was possible to love an animated Batman film more than 'Return of the Joker' and 'Under the Red Hood', but Bruce Timm and DC really delivered here. Earth-31 Batman has been a favorite of mine for quite some time, so I was excited to hear this was happening, but I didn't think I'd enjoy it this much.
The animation style is the perfect melding of Timm and Miller's design style. And Bruce's rather dark inner monologue has been lovingly replaced with a score and soundtrack that is quintessentially 80s -- the changes made due to the change in medium work surprisingly well. The pacing is steady, and the voice work is great; Peter Weller as an older Batman works *very* well. ****.
