Review of Batman Returns (1992) by Kenai L — 21 Jul 2012
While certainly not the weakest sequel of the original run of films, "Batman Returns" seems too content with playing off of Burton's idiosyncrasies, which do more harm than good for the final product.
While it is understood that Batman's universe is a very dark and dreadful place, the tone here becomes a little too campy to be considered serious, and at times that proves too overbearing. Also, the film repeats the same mistake as the first when focusing on the two villains more than the titular hero; and the Penguin as the main villain is not as dynamic a presence as the Joker.
One of the few bright spots is the relationship shared on-screen between Keaton and Pfeiffer's characters, but despite the brilliant chemistry, "Returns" does not live up to the standards set by the first movie,.
