Review of Batman Returns (1992) by Austin W — 22 Jul 2012
I do not understand how anyone could describe this sequel as being better than the original, but I respect the opinions of others and will offer my take on this movie.
Danny DeVito is good as the penguin, and he brings a certain charisma to the role of an embittered outcast, but sadly the strength of his character alone is not enough to hide the various examples of stupidity to be found.
Michelle Pfeiffer just isn't convincing and it's impossible to believe the drastic change from shy and confidence-lacking career woman to the confident, alluring but very dangerous Catwoman.
Michael Keaton just seems to go through the motions in this sequel, not even coming close to capturing the powerful emotion his character shows in the first movie opposite Jack Nicholson's Joker.
As for being darker, the only truth to that is whenever scenes are shot in the sewers.
