The problem with Batman Returns is it takes far too long to get to the point. Burton drops a whole lot of plot lines and setup in order to eventually get to the epic conclusion, but it feels messy and incoherent.
Add to the fact that it's both cheesy and dark, and it leaves the audience not knowing exactly what to think. It's not a total failure, as the last 30 minutes are excellent, but that's hardly enough to recommend it.
