Review of Batman Returns (1992) by Justin B — 09 Sep 2012
My opinion of the perfect Batman film for Batman fans, much like how Dark Knight is perfect for movie fans in general, BR hits the nail on the head in almost every area. From the getgo, the world is highly realized and is a benchmark for what Gotham should be in films.
The characters are very well developed, with tons of interesting choices. For starters, Catwoman has been reimagined as a paranormal scorned woman out for revenge, but with a split personality that plays off of Keaton's Bruce Wayne's quirky nature.
Christopher Walken delivers an astounding performance as an auxiliary villain. But the greatest triumph of this movie if DeVito's Penguin: When you change a popular character so drastically and make him better, especially considering the strict following comic fans are, you know you have done something right.
Aside from the choice to have Batman kill, which doesn't happen often and is mostly the writer's choice, this is the perfect Batman film.
