Review of Batman Returns (1992) by Joshua B — 30 Nov 2014
MINOR SPOILERS.
Batman Returns is the first Batman movie I remember watching. The Dark Knight may be my favorite movie of all time, but Batman Returns still feels like the definitive Batman movie, as well as Tim Burton's best movie.
Everyone is perfectly cast, the villains are the real stars. Danny DeVito's version of Penguin is nasty, corrupt and downright murderous. In fact, this Penguin is so scary, no one else has played the character in over 20 years! Michelle Pfieffer's Catwoman is also unbeatable. She's seductive and crazy, and a more villainous Catwoman than any other on screen portrayal.
The story is actually really dark, especially for it's time (which is probably why we have movies like Batman Forever and Batman & Robin). Penguin's plot to kill all the first born sons of Gotham is only side tracked by Christopher Walken (played by Christopher Walken) and his plans of corrupt politics, but his original plans remain his main goal one way or another.
This is actually my second my second favorite Batman movie. Michael Keaton kills it in this, pretty much everyone does, the movie has a dark tone and atmosphere worthy of a Batman movie, and this proves that you don't need the Joker to have a terrific Batman movie.
9.5/10.
