Review of Batman Returns (1992) by Evan C — 14 Jun 2015
Not only does Burton boost up the darkness, he boosts up the characters, and that's a problem.
Batman Returns is an interesting movie. I like it, and I don't. Sadly, I overall don't like it, but I'm not saying I hate it. It has a special side to it, and is in my opinion and impact to the Batman film universe.
With the great production design that I enjoyed in the first film, things begin to go downhill near the beginning of the movie. We are introduced with the odd story of Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin. It's basically the infant Oswald eating a cat, being overlooked by his upset and disturbed parents, aka, Pee Wee Herman and a blonde lady.
The Penguin's story plays a major role in the film. The upsetting part is, we can't dig deep into it with all of the characters that are thrown into our arms. Selina Kyle is relevant, and played well by Michelle Pfeiffer. Then, Christopher Walken and his goons are thrown into the mix, then interfering with Penguin's present day issues, literally and figuratively.
Not only do the characters annoy me, I can't help but mention that the brooding and eerie tone to the movie almost kind of ruins the experience. I would do anything for just a glance of a blue sky. Heck, I would've even killed off Batman for it. The whole film is basically black, and disturbing. Not a spooky disturbing. A disturbing that honestly is pointless. Babies being eaten, faces being cat-scratched, Penguin making sexual jokes, and an army of live, killer penguins.
Being a Batman fan, I didn't like it. This proves that Burton still can't get away with pleasing the DC Nation.
