Review of Batman Returns (1992) by Jonny B — 18 Jul 2012

Tim Burton's sequel to his original 1989 caped crusader adaption Batman is far superior in every manner.

While Jack Nicholson's Joker may have been excellent, Danny DeVito and Michelle Pfeiffer as Penguin and Catwoman provide an equally impressive duo of villains for Michael Keaton's Dark Knight to tame.

Pfeiffer's Catwoman portrayal is outstandingly good; she is a misunderstood outcast with a lively personality and fits into the dark atmosphere of Batman Returns. Her acting is realistic and empathetic which makes us develop feelings for how she progresses in the story.

Danny DeVito's Penguin is also an inspired casting even if he lurks a little in the shadow of Pfeiffer. DeVito was a fine choice for the menacing crook and already I feel typecast by linking himself to the role of the Penguin from the top of my head.

The plot follows Max Shreck (Christopher Walken), a corrupt businessman who is intent on showing Gotham a false negative interpretation of Batman (Keaton). This links to him teaming uo with the Penguin (DeVito) and his master plan to take Gotham's residents by storm.

Meanwhile Shreck happens to make a dangerous enemy from Selina Kyle (Pfeiffer) when he attempts to murder her by pushing her off a rooftop. However, she is healed via the assistance of cats and gains many new abilities which link to those of a cat.

In comparison to Batman, there is a more structured, dark and emotional plot line in place instead of a dis jointed story revolving around Nicholson's Joker. You feel more for the characters as they have more personality and the dark tone to the film is a real plus.
