Review of Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman (2003) by Tanya K — 09 Apr 2010
Here's one for fans six years in the waiting. At the time of its release, Batman's popularity was at an all time low due several box office flops which many feel put the last nail in the franchise's coffin.
One can only imagine the excitement when this throwback to the original animated series was released as one last hurrah. Bringing back the original team of animators, veteran Batman director Curt Geda delivers a Batman rich in story, character and stylized dark deco.
The stunning animation and intriguing mystery is compelling enough to draw anybody in, Batman fan or not. Penguin is classically written, presented in a clean-cut top hat and tuxedo, harkening back to his debonair characterization of old, and Bane is just awesome to watch.
And here's some trivia: the character of Kathy Duquesne (and the Batwoman uniform, for that matter) is an homage to Kathy Kane, ie: Batwoman from the Batman comic books of the '50s and '60s.
So, it's 2003 and thanks to Geda Batman is suddenly cool again. Cue Mr. Christopher Nolan.
