Review of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) by Greg P — 03 Jan 2011
One of the last great animated series that is provided with a suitable tribute. This film was more expansive than I had thought. The new animated film released in 2010 is based around violence with no emotional core.
The Mask of Phantasm is actually similar to Batman Begins in many ways, striking many of the same themes. The visual style and Art Deco aesthetics are great to look at. Big O tried repeating it but I have rarely seen anything similar since. The plot always remains interesting and the character design of the villain is scary.
It is great to see the Joker involved even as he remains on the periphery for much of proceedings. Mark Hamill is fantastic in the role. The flashbacks and nostalgic tone elevate the genre of animated films. A feeling of loss and regret pervades the film. There can be no happy ending.
