Review of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) by Mike M — 01 Sep 2012
Maybe I just waited too many years to see this one, but this truly proved to be a underwhelming outing with the Dark Knight detective. Viewed on state of the art VHS with my son, the action takes a backseat to storytelling in this feature - and not for the better.
Lots of talking, lots of flashbacks (which can get confusing for younger viewers - meaning those under 42) and, in the end, a "mystery" that isn't exactly difficult to solve, Mask of the Phantasm is a product of its time: Batman taken seriously again in a dramatic form, just not in the most entertaining fashion.
