Review of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) by Robert J — 11 Apr 2014
I really can't BS this. This is one of my favorite movies ever made and it tops the other Batman movies (and yes that includes the Nolan movies). First, the story makes sense. The characters have feelings, motivations, and you truly understand why these characters are the way they are and the choices they make.
The Nolan movies were good, but at times the stories stepped into nonsense territory. This movie is consistent and coherent throughout the 75 minute run time. The movie is also very tight and to the point which goes along with the run time.
The Nolan films, (particularly Dark Knight Rises), felt bloated and needlessly long at times. To summarize, this film is smart, deep, gripping, well written, tight, and coherent. This is the gold standard for Batman movies.
