Review of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) by Jesse B — 05 May 2014
Ranking up there with the Nolan trilogy, The Mask Of The Phantasm, like the show it was spun from, escapes the usual trappings of action cartoons with it's noirish backbone (much of its in the animation itself, how many other "cartoons" have such a dark color palette? Answer is next to none.
) This is a film in its own right, not only tackling subjects such as love and revenge, but daring to pit the two against each other. Mark Hammill is better here as The Joker than he was as Luke Skywalker, but the original villain makes the film.
Not to mention it's beautifully animated for a limited release movie based on a WB cartoon, no for any cartoon period. Great score too. Haunting.
