Batman Gotham Knight was meant to have similar role as Animatrix in relation to Matrix series (that is to fill the gaps or to contribute with minor stories). Very noticeably, it was directed by Japanese animators (Anime sense of dynamics worked with Batman just great.
Especially in my favourite first episode). Well, I liked it more than The Dark Knight.
