Review of Batman Forever (1995) by Brandon W — 22 Jan 2015
Not the best of the Batman franchise, but it's Batman nevertheless so it's automatically enjoyable and watchable over and over again. It is definitely one of the most comic book style editions and is not in the least bit dark.
When you have Jim Carrey as one of the villains it's always going to be made more camp than terrifying, but he plays the part of the Riddler well, and entertains us in his usual brand of humour. I was a little disappointed with Two-face as at the start of the film he has already turned into the psychotic alter ego and there's no transition to enjoy like in the original film with the joker.
This character is also a bit lacking in menace if you ask me as he appears to have no special powers or attributes, just a coin and a load of guns. Val Kilmer does an ok job as the lead hero, Robin is an unessential addition of further campness, and the innocence of Kidmans girl is far weaker when it's following the sauciness of Catwoman from the last episode.
I'm not sure if the influx of big names and shared screen time have benefitted this film as it's often best to have one baddy and one goody where you can focus more on each, and allow them to fulfil their roles to the max before executing a thrilling conclusion on the battlefield.
It's still exciting and a good family fun film but probably my least favourite of those to date.
