Review of Batman Beyond: The Movie (1999) by Steve S — 31 Jul 2010
Batman Beyond is an excellent companion piece the Batman: TAS series. Taken 50 years into the future, Beyond picks up where Bruce Wayne can physically no longer don the costume.
Beyond has more of a Spider-man feel to it, due to the age of the new Batman, Terry McGinnis. As a high school student, McGinnes tries to balance his social life (girlfriend/school) while serving under Bruce Wayne's guidance.
Beyond has a similar dark art style to TAS along with an excellent musical score. The enemies are fresh and are not rehashes of former Batman villains. Though some do make appearances, they only appear as they would have 50+ years later.
This series had big shoes to fill, but the episodes are done very well in comparison to TAS. Watching this series feels more of an expansion to the TAS rather than a brand-new Batman series.
Season 1 contains 13 episodes that keeps the viewers interest with no dud episodes. Though some of the enemies feel a bit forgettable in some episodes, the main villain Blight is an excellent addition to the Batman villain universe.
People may turn their heads away from this series because it looks very different than the original crime fighter. I can only wish that you would take a chance on this series.
Bottom line: If you loved TAS, you will feel right at home here.
Highly Recommended.
