Review of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000) by Joe O — 06 Aug 2009
At the risk of offending some fellow nerds and Batman fans, I must say that the fact that I am a huge Batman fan, is why I didn't really like this movie very much. Because it's everything Batman isn't.
Batman is the caped crusader he as they say in The Dark Knight "a man who in his spare time beats criminals with bare hands". He's the most realistic superhero there is. And this was Batman meets the Jetsons.
And as I huge Batman fan I scoffed at the notion that somehow this 'New Batman' would be better at taking on the Joker than the original because he can 'get inside the Joker's head'.
..Wtf ever! Is it weird that I was rooting for the Joker? Because he was right. Batman Beyond is a 'Bat-fake'. At it's base the whole concept of the Batman of the new millennium was nothing more than some lame brain executive's idea of how to 'connect' with the non-geeks, and geeks alike.
I guess they thought back in 2000 that the old Batman couldn't get over anymore. Yeah...
