Review of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000) by Chun W — 18 Jun 2010
This movie took a brave step and it paid off!
This is an awesome addition to the animated Batman legacy. Mark Hamill returns as the classic voice of the iconic animated joker whom we all know from the classic 90s batman animated series.
50 years on from the universe and timeline established by the Batman Animated series of the 90s. Gotham is now in a neo tech future.
Bruce Wayne is in his 80s and no longer the Batman. Instead his apprentice Terry Mcginnis dons a new upgraded futuristic Batsuit.
The plot is great and involves the Joker's mysterious return to Gotham in the future. Showing no sign of age or any clue to how he is back, despite his death nearly 50 years ago.
This death of Hamills joker was established as a flashback and put as an expanded story in the classic 90s Batman Animated Series Universe.
How the Joker returns is also another brilliant plot twist!
Some awesome dialogue and one liners in this movie and it's great concept to see how future Gotham, looks back at the cape and cowl days, and that the Joker's legacy and memory is still as menacing as ever.
"Ahh the new boy, yes ears are a bit too long and I miss the cape, but not too shabby, not too shabby at all!" (Hamill's Joker referring to the new Batmsuit.).
Mark Hamills joker is one of the best Joker performance he has given, along with his performance on Mask of the Phantasm.
Classic voice talents including Hamill and Batman's Kevin Conroy reprise their roles! A truly good addition to the Batman universe, it's dark and respectfully uses the classic present Batman universe sources, heroes and villians, & looks at it in a perspective from 50 years onwards. And it's a very cool vision!
