Batman Beyond is definitely beyond Batman. Rather than simply a sub-plot, this series is an entirely new universe, replacing the original, now retired Batman with a Cape(less) Crusader full of adolescent wit and devoid of the Dark Knight's toughness.
An appreciation for the Batman franchise will not automatically result in an appreciation for Batman Beyond.
