Christopher Nolan's reboot of the Batman saga begins with this first film of a trilogy. It provides a more darker interpretation than previous iterations of the franchise. At times it was a little tedious and predictable and it did not live up to its hype of its successors. Setting up the back story by switching back and forth between Bruce Wayne's boyhood, before his parents were murdered, and his training with the League of Shadows was a bit confusing when viewed for the first time. It could have been done in a more chronological manner. The film also takes liberties with some elements of the origins of Bruce Wayne/Batman as originally envisioned by Bob Kane.

The major failing of the film for me was Christian Bales' wooden acting in his role of Bruce Wayne and his raspy Batman voice was more comical than authoritative. Katie Holmes' acting as Rachel Dawes was similarly uninspiring. However, the rest of the cast, especially Liam Neeson, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman were very good.
