Review of Batman Begins (2005) by Miles S — 02 Aug 2016
The Dark Knight Trilogy begins with a bang. BATMAN BEGINS is an excellent big screen adaptation of the masked crimefighter that is one of the most exciting superhero origin stories ever told on screen.
The Batman film franchise came to a screeching halt after the neon rich disaster that was BATMAN AND ROBIN (1997). The planned sequel BATMAN TRIUMPHANT was scrapped and Warner Brothers was at a loss for ideas about the future of batman big screen adaptations, Joss Whedon (AVENGERS (2012) unsuccessfully pitched a Batman film to the company, however the pitch did open them to ideas, Enter Christoper Nolan.
I enjoyed the performances in this film save Katie Holmes but Liam Neeson's mesmerizing performance as the villain was what caught my attention( Morgan freeman was entertaining and Scarecrow and Falcone were also okay villains.
the soundtrack is good, but fails to best Danny Elfman's iconic theme. The film is surprisingly realistic and the practical effects are great. A standout sequence was the tumbler chase, it was a vastly impressive scene that captured the spirit of Nolan's new films.
The league of shadows was an interesting prospect that could been explored more in later films, but was there was immensely satisfying. the stylization of the metropolitan Gotham and the chosen inspirational one liner ( "why do we fall?" "so we can get back up".
) detracted ever so slightly from the experience (even though it was one of the better one liners in recent years). Even with those small dents the positives certainly tower over the negatives. In conclusion BATMAN BEGINS is a masterfully told origin story that both opened the doors for bigger and better superhero film and reinvigorated interest in the caped crusader with it's mature and realistic tone.
I'd give BATMAN BEGINS an 8/10.
