Review of Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero (1998) by Bryan E. W — 04 Jun 2009
I think the only reason that I never saw this was because it came out the same time as Batman & Robin, and that piece of garbage left a nasty taste in my mouth so bad that you couldn't get rid of with bleach.
Which is unfortunate because Batman: Subzero is a really good flick. OK, it's more like a lengthened episode of the animated series, but it's a lengthened episode of one of the best animated shows of all time! Unlike Batman Mask Of The Phantasm, this movie isn't really about Bats, it's focused, to a large degree on Mr.
Freeze. Who is treated like a real character with motivations, and conflict, instead of just spitting out various "ice" puns. The story is paced very well, I never felt bored, and was even a little tense at times.
The animation is wonderful, but there are a few CGI shots that feel a little dated. The score beautiful, it's largely influenced by Elfman's work on the Batman films, but it's original enough to have it's own flavor.
Overall it's got almost everything you could want out of a Comic Book flick, and it's a nice addition to the animated Batman library.
