Review of Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero (1998) by J K — 07 Jun 2010
Ah, nostalgia. Fun stuff, this is. I have always loved the Batman Animated Series and this film is just a bare bones, no frills story told in the classic Batman style. Kevin Conroy has always been the best to ever play Batman, even if he only did the voice for the cartoon.
His deep, dark voice is just perfect, setting the mood and atmosphere of Gotham City with unbelievable clarity. The other actors are great, too, with Michael Ansara's Mr. Freeze having the other stand out performance here.
I just love that icy, hollow tone he has. It's just fucking perfect. The story is simple enough - Freeze kidnaps Barbara Gordon to save his dying wife, since Gordon has the same blood type and can provide an organ transplant.
..against her will, though, as they have to kidnap her to do it. So of course Batman and his boy wonder Robin have to come save her. The movie is tragic and cold, and once it's over, you'll feel a little chilled, too.
