This movie works for the same reason deadpool works. Children who watch cartoons and read comics eventually grow up yet the tone of these properties usually stays targeted at children. It's nice to have something you loved as a child grow up with you.

This film has a single fart joke, mild swearing (seriously, most children swear more). Its neither PC nor PG just a good fun film.

I very rarely ever hear a director, producer or actor bag another person's movie, and they are the only ones really qualified to do so.

Watching a lot of movies can only make you an expert in watching movies, if you want to be an expert in movie quality, make some movies yourself.
