Review of Batman (1989) by Cj S — 10 Nov 2014
Corny, overblown and clunky. But this thing captures the sprit of the Batman comic book which is one of the things I can say Burton got right. Most of the characters are flat and one dimensional the character of Bruce Wayne himself is a mystery and enigma and that's to be respected at the time.
If anything this film feels like the pilot to a really great Batman tv show. For someone who is proud of his performance Jack Nicholson is very showy as The Joker embodying more of the clown aspects and not really the menacing nightmarish parts of the role.
Keaton is great and does a great job as Bruce Wayne but not really fleshed out as Batman as he plays the role very stoic. The production design is great, the most interesting part of the film is before the Joker shows up as it does brilliantly to set up the world but falls flat once The Joker enters the film as it never really lands and feels to much like Burton was focused on The Joker and not really on anyone else.
Also there's a lot of things that Batman does that's just out of character and can't be forgiven even if your a hardcore Batman fan. All in all this is a great film and one of my favorite Burton films and ranks number 4 on my favorite Batman films.
