Review of Batman (1989) by Richard D — 05 Apr 2015
I have never been very fond of Tim Burton's first Batman film, but on this latest viewing, I find I like it more than I ever have before. Perhaps it's just that I really appreciate it more in contrast to the overly serious Nolan films and the objectionably goofy Schumacher films.
It's a wonderful looking film, that's for sure and the early parts that set up characters and plot are done well. It's when it turns into an action film in the last act that it completely falls apart.
When it first came out, I thought that Nicholson's Joker was disappointingly over-the-top. I really don't feel that way now. It's a more nuanced performance than it's often given credit for.
Keaton is fine as Batman, but he's obviously hampered by a costume that restricts his movement to an absurd degree.
