Review of Batman (1989) by Anthony G — 08 May 2018
A brilliant and unnerving re-introduction to the caped crusader for the movie world. It's hard to imagine how much of a gamble this movie was with Adam West's Batman still popular or where comic book movies would be today without this movie!
This film was a game changer that is still being felt today in theatres with the Marvel universe.
It's not hyperbole or an over exaggeration. The thought of a believable comic book franchise in the 80s was a huge jump into the unknown.
This film delivered in spades and spawned a string of unsuccessful imitators in the 90s.
Tim Burton's film still holds up remarkably well. Although, purists will complain about it now not having an origin story and being too focused on the Joker they missed the point.
This film appeals to anyone who loves Batman the comic persona, or enjoys a good movie. You don't need to be a fan to sit through this film and you don't need to know anything about Batman either.
Nicholson's performance as the Joker is absolutely brilliant and he really steals the show here. Burton knew what he had and ran with it!
On top of that Burton's imagination for an eerie Gotham city keeps this film grounded and real. One of his best films and still a joy to watch 30 yrs later!
