Review of Basquiat (1996) by Jennifer X — 27 Nov 2008
This film is definitely great and deserving attention and so very under-rated. Jeffrey Wright is brilliant! They couldn't have found a better actor. And I must admit I deem that this performance of his is his best one to date -including the one in Angels in America.
Gives you a great insight in a quite inspiring story of a black man trying to break the surface and fight the prejudiced minds in the art world of that era. And as his life was tragic, complicated and insane, so was his ending.
Great biographical film although slow and pointless at times, wonderful performances by the entire cast -even the secondary characters- and a truly amazing soundtrack and direction. But -still- it lacks something and leaves you with a bitter taste of inadequacy in the mouth. Too bad.
