Review of Basquiat (1996) by Lee B — 05 Jan 2009
The price of talent in a world who loved him but also sucked him dry. Wright is a great actor, and did a wonderful job at picking up on the swagger, the loneliness, confusion, inner struggle, and over all mannerisms of the talented young man. David Bowie played warhol very humorously, and seeing the relationship between warhol and basquiat played out so accurately was amazing. del Toro was great, he always is. And seeing how into trip hop and video manipulation Basquiat and his friends were made me giddy. Just knwoing that there was so much talent there and that these young men were so "before their time". The demise of Basquiat was certainly devastating, but a lot of blame should be put on the art world and the way they took him for granted, making him into a sort of celebrity based off of the types of things they liked to say about him, and the company he kept. No one seemed to truly care, and he [basquiat] felt this as much as it was apparent.
Parker posey plays a bitch well, snobby and racist and an example of how simple and pretentious the very people who made Basquiat popular were.
