Review of Basket Case (1982) by Samuel M — 18 Jun 2016
Bad movies are funny for different reasons, and Basket Case is a low-budget horror oddity that derives humor from interesting and unexpected places. The film tells the story of a young man taking his separated conjoined twin to New York City in a wicker basket with the purpose of tracking down and killing the doctors that performed the non-consensual surgery.
The taller brother looks like he should answer a casting call for The Greatest American Hero, and the shorter, less attractive brother is in need of a good orthodontist and completing the gestational process.
The consistent presence of wisecracking NYC residents keeps the mood light, and director Frank Henenlotter's inclusion of a man running naked through the streets of New York and a woman getting sexually assaulted and murdered by an amorphous blob proves Basket Case has a little something for everyone.
Endlessly whacky and never boring, Basket Case certainly earned its reputation as a minor classic.
