Review of Baskın (2013) by Erin K — 19 Apr 2017
An aesthetically beautiful movie (maybe not beautiful in a traditional sense, captivating? sublime?) but ultimately frustrating in that it never fully delivers on the promise it shows. Like a carnival ride it is quick, very enjoyable and ultimately dependent on visuals to make up for what it lacks in real substance. That being said, I still only feel negatively about it because of all the moments that reveal how much MORE this movie could be given more time to expand on the concepts from the original short film. I want to love it, even with it's faults and shortcomings. Even though it's not quite there, I will definitely be following this director's work in the future.
A NOTE ON THE GORE for those concerned about it: while the gore may be a bit much for someone new to horror, the over-the-top quality combined with the fast pace of many of the early gore-packed scenes give the blood and guts an unreal quality that have made it watchable for even some of my more squeamish friends. Some may want to play it careful with the sexual assault scene, but that may be more down to personal squicks and triggers. It was not as bad as I was originally led to believe, but still uncomfortable and potentially a very, very disturbing scene depending on the viewer(s).
