Review of Basic Instinct (1992) by Kevin M — 09 Apr 2010
There's a good reason stage magicians always have scantily clad female assistants: sex is the most powerful form of misdirection. Without the perverted characters, abrasive Jerry Goldsmith score, and your typical Verhoeven-esque excesses, "Basic Instinct" is laughably feeble; it's as dimwitted as thrillers can get. The solution is revealed with the opening murder, Columbo style, and the rest of the story consists of us savvy viewers waiting for Michael Douglas to die a painful icepick death. Alas, we are denied even that.
Bonus half star for some stunning anamorphic photography.
