Review of Basic Instinct (1992) by James S — 31 Jan 2011
When the great movie dictionary is written under trashy thriller you will see a photo of Basic Instinct.
Wonderfully airport bookish, this simple cat and mouse tale weaves it's way through a cheesy script, a few good twists and lots of sex. Lots and lots of sex.
It still seems quite graphic in comparison to most of today's movies and Sharon Stone does give a good performance as the femme fatale who may or may not be a murdering psychopath who Michael Douglas' detective just can't stay away from.
Verhoevan's direction is brillaintly Hitchcockesque, lots of wonderful sweeping aerial shots of highways and San Francisco.
Basic Instinct is primarily remembered for one shot which has nothing to do with the film whatsoever but it's unfair to judge it on that. It is a good thriller, very watchable and cheap entertainment of the highest order.
