Review of Basic Instinct (1992) by Gregory G — 02 Jan 2014
It's like a really good, pulpy novel. in Basic Instinct, an erotic novelist sets her sights on a police detective who has quite a few skeletons in his closet. Soon, he finds himself caught in a web of murder, deceit, and steamy sex as he quickly loses sight of not only who he can trust, but also the truth.
Sharon Stone puts on a superb, memorable performance as Catherine Tramell, the femme fatal. She has one rocking body that she has no qualms with constantly showing off. She is absolutely evil and manipulative here (she LOVES to toy with Nick), but she is also super sexy and you love her nonetheless.
Michael Douglas is great as always as Detective Nick Curran. the rest of the cast (George Dzundza as Nick's partner Gus, the only one who is able to see things clearly, and Jeanne Tripplehorn as Beth Garner, the police station's psychologist who used to fuck Nick and has a sizable role to play in the proceedings.
She also gets nude.) put on top notch performances as well. Basic Instinct is a ton of super sexy fun that's filled with suspense and a great deal of intrigue. If you're not having fun watching the numerous scenes of sex and nudity, then you will surely have fun watching the detective plot line and trying to figure out the truth along with Nick.
It's a surprisingly complex film, and it's Verhoeven's best film I've seen thus far. If you love film noir, sex, and pulpy novels then Basic instinct is definitely the film for you.
