Review of Basic (2003) by Joy H — 11 Sep 2007
I landed on the love side of this love or hate film. A truly intelligent thriller, well-directed and well-acted, the style, the plot, and the story all work together very well and while many movies use twists as a sudden "A-HA" moments to impress you, this movie uses them for real reasons.
The movie is, to give only the slightest of spoilers, all about storytelling and lies and the film does an excellent job of never selling itself out on what it's doing. John Travolta's performance is loathed and loved equally by viewers, but I think it fits very well as a lot of the persona is just that, a persona, a man used to cons and conning.
