Review of Basic (2003) by Tony P — 14 Oct 2008
Being a fan of McTiernan and mindfucks, this is right up my alley. I acknowledge that the plot is contrived and eventually pointless, but Basic is a ride that I enjoy everytime I get on. McTiernan is an expert in directing action and pacing suspense.
He has disected a complicated script and visually constructed each clue to be memorable once revisited. The editing also does well in keeping characters, plot points, and snippets of information in check with the audience.
I admire the craft and the comedy in script, the exactitude of the filmmaking, and the naturalism of the performances MINUS Connie Nielson whose southern accent is so wayward and flakey it's insulting.
One of my favorites, see it if you're into twists and turns.
