Review of BASEketball (1998) by Josh S — 08 May 2009
Sometimes you need to watch a film like this. Now I don't know if I enjoyed it because I was so tired, or the fact that I had just watched Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and needed to get the nasty taste out of my mouth from that crapfest, but I had a fun time watching this. The comedy is very similar to such lampooning films like Airplane!, Naked Gun and Ruthless People (all by the same director) and who cares if it's trying to be funny. I laughed. I enjoyed myself. Matt Stone and Trey Parker play two buddies who take the sports world by storm when they form an innovative new sport called Baseketball: Basically driveway basketball played with baseball rules. Except you can do anything you want to psyche your opponent out.
Sure the subplot is lame, but some of the gags are great: Matt Stone transfixed on a bird, a slapstick hospital ordeal, and a heartbroken friend giving his tearful opinion while dressed up as a giant pineapple are among some of the funny bits in here. I am also glad Matt Stone was given a big enough part.
