Review of BASEketball (1998) by Al L — 03 Jan 2010
When Bob Costas and Al Michaels are the best actors in your movie, you know you're in trouble. Parker and Stone were flush from the success of South Park when they starred in--but hugely importantly, DID NOT write or direct--this horrible film. That dishonor goes to David Zucker, who gave us Kentucky Fried Movie, Airplane, Police Squad...but probably should've hung up his pencil after the Naked Gun movies. (Curse of OJ? Not sure.) Because the jokes are crummy (with few exceptions) and the movie is painful to sit through.
The first 15 minutes or so are OK. There's a novelty in seeing Parker and Stone playing slackers, but the novelty soon wears off. Parker sort of has a Nicolas Cage-esque shaggy charm. Sort of. Stone unfortunately recalls Dustin Diamond. I guess it's fun to see the many sportscaster cameos. But after so many failed jokes, it really was arduous to reach the end of the movie. I'm not surprised that Parker and Stone have stayed behind the camera the past 12 years.
